Cuan Baoi Sea Farms have been granted an aquaculture license for placing salmon cages at Geahries in Bantry Bay, directly over active and productive scallop ground that was reseeded with juvenile scallop in June 2000. This area was active herring spawning ground prior to salmon cages being placed there some years ago. FISH lodged an objection to The Aquaculturel Lcenses Appeals Boardthrough their solicitors and also requested an oral hearing. The oral hearing was denied. On 23rd April 2001, the Appeals Board approved the planning application. Since their impementation the Appeals Board have handled over 120 appeals. Only two of these were upheld, the remaing 118 were turned down. FISH are in consultation with senior politicians and their solicitors over this situation.
