The Department of the Marine have issued a trial license for a salmon farm in what fishing groups describe as highly productive fishing grounds in Kenmare Bay at the mouth of the Kenmare River. Apparently this trial license is valid for one year and gives no recourse to any appeal process. An application for a full 10 year license is also in process. The productivity of the ground is disputed by Aquafact who conducted a dive of the area and took underwater videos. It is interesting to note that as usual, nobody requested or accepted the word of the experts, the fishermen themselves who have fished the grounds for generations. A public meeting on Sunday evening 28th May in the Riversdale Hotel in Kenmare was well attended by commercial fishermen, anglers, tourism operators, residents, conservationists, all of whom were objecting to the trial license. Representatives of the company, a division of the Laschinger group had flown in especially to attend. They have other aquaculture operations in Kilmacilogue, Bantry Bay and the Shetlands. A committee has been formed to address the situation and legal consultation is in progress. |
